tofutti not cutie

TofuttiA lot of folks are going to be cranky about this one! Let me say, before I break the bad news, that despite appearances, I don’t hate food. Anyone who knows me (and particularly those who have lived with me) is well aware that I’m a total foodie, despite my rather specific way of eating.

Okay, now the bad news. Yes, Tofutti Cuties are chock full of high fructose corn syrup and other additives. Why would they do this??? Another disappointment is that Tofutti Better Than Cream Cheese, a delight to bagel craving vegans, has partially hydrogenated soybean oil aka trans fat aka death serum. Is this a plot to rid the world of all vegans? At least it provide an opportunity to use your Guerrilla Nutrition Labels.

I’m not going to dwell on that. For now here’s a funny post on Tofutti Cuties on Gawker (the comments are grand). And a suggestion for something entirely delicious. Not eating milk products and not being a fan of soy ice cream, I was looking for a substitute for summer love. But this is no substitute, this stuff is the real thing. Sharon’s Sorbet is a great frozen treat and they have a chocolate that will make you forget ice creamSharon’s Sorbet ever existed. The ingredients of the raspberry sorbet are: raspberries, water, cane sugar, lemon juice and pectin (which comes from fruits like apples, but if anyone knows something evil about pectin, holler, it looks good to me). I’m sure there are plenty of other all natural sorbets out there; just watch out for high fructose corn syrup.

Noooooo! My lactose-intolerant intestines and taste buds are in denial about this exposé of the Tofutti dynasty. But, Sarah, thank you for ending on a positive note and giving us an alternate dessert treat. I also recommend Ciao Bella Coconut sorbet for its creamy consistency w/o dairy and its not-too-sweet coconut flavor. I discovered this sorbet on a Nolita expedition with Sarah in 2001. I just checked the ingredients online (a first for me!) and they look good to me: Coconut, Water & Sugar, Guar Gum, Lotus Bean. What do you think Sarah?

Ciao Bella looks good to me, Ma. Lotus bean sounds yummy. I was suspicious of Guar Gum, but, in fact, Guar Gum may have specific health BENEFITS:

Guar Gum is a water soluble fiber that acts as a bulk forming laxative, and as such, it is claimed to be effective in promoting regular bowel movements and relieve constipation and chronic related functional bowel ailments; such as diverticulosis, Crohn’s disease, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome, among others. The increased mass in the intestines stimulates the movement of waste and toxins from the system, which is particularly helpful for good colon health, because it speeds the removal of waste and bacteria from the bowel and colon. In addition, because it is soluble, it is also able to absorb toxic substances (bacteria) that cause infective diarrhea.

  3. With all this talk about lactose intolerance, I have to pass on my joy at finding the most amazing cheese replacement in the world. NUTRITIONAL YEAST is one of the most amazing condiments ever, and if anyone is looking for a cheese replacement, try this. From what I understand, it’s basically yeast that has been heated until deactivated and then made into flakes. It tastes somewhat like parmesan cheese, but it just has this richness that I haven’t found in anything else. I put it on almost everything – I especially like to put it on baked potatoes. You can find it at health-food stores in the bulk section. So down with Tofutti poison and yeah for nutritional yeast!

    Peace out,
    Sergei

  4. Thanks for the tip, Sergei!

  5. An FYI, my daughter had an allergic reaction, then reread the ingredients. There is coconut in the treat. The fourth ingredient listed.

    thanks for the heads up!

  7. Just read the information on Tofutti Cuties. Had a coupon for $1.50 and thought it was a great deal. I’ve had this treat only one other time and thought it delicious (lazy about reading labels). After reading your blurb, I tossed the coupon and am hoping to find one of the other treats mentioned on this site.

    Thanks.

  9. This is just UNTRUE!!! Tofutti Cuties contain corn syrup solids, NOT high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). They are totally different things! In fact, corn syrup is healthier than plain sugar. Corn syrup contains glucose, which the body uses best. HFCS is corn syrup which has been enzymatically processed, changing the glucose into fructose, and then glucose has been added back in to the desired sweetness, usually 40-50% glucose, 50-60% fructose. Fructose is bad for you, NOT glucose! Regular table sugar is sucrose, which is a disaccharide (double sugar), containing one unit of glucose and one unit of fructose. So HFCS is the worst, having the most fructose, which the body doesn’t process in the same way it processes glucose and which therefore leads to obesity, diabetes, and other health issues. Table sugar is second worst, since the body breaks each molecule down into one glucose and one fructose. But corn syrup is ALL GLUCOSE, and is therefore the best sugar of the three!!! So please stop telling people (1) that Tofutti contains HFCS, because it doesn’t; and (2) that Tofutti is bad for you, because it isn’t.
